Pinkerton and several of his agents infiltrated the meetings of the Knights of the Golden Circle. They learned that KGC planned to assassinate Lincoln when he arrived at the Baltimore train station on February 23. As the Pinkerton agents were uncovering the conspiracy, General Winfield Scott, who was in charge of Lincoln’s safety, also learned about the threat from his own sources. Scott then warned Lincoln’s future Secretary of State, William Seward, of the danger.
