My first zit … my first bra … my first kiss

My birth mom missed them all. She should have been there to tell me it was fine, to reassure me and hold my hand when I got scared. Instead, now I’ll never get the chance to meet her because my dad’s moving us two thousand miles away—to California.

But she needs to know what’s happening. She has to understand what’s going on in my life, what’s important to me and why I act like I do from time to time.

That’s why I started this diary. It’s a collection of my thoughts, wishes, fears and desires. Hundreds of them, from the past 11 years, all committed to paper and meant for the eyes of just one person. My mom…

AUTHOR’S NOTE:

Told through a series of diary entries dedicated to the mother who gave her up for adoption, the Confessions of a Nerdy Girl diary series features Willa, a preteen struggling for acceptance. Willa’s quirky yet engaging personality shines through in her stream-of-consciousness style writing as Willa shares the good, the bad, and the oh so awkward moments of adolescence.

With easy-to-read stylized font and frequent line breaks, the books are popular with reluctant readers. Willa’s words are both heartfelt and humorous, and reflect the challenges of a present time preteen and the rollercoaster of emotions that come from dealing with many of life’s “firsts.” …First bra, first period, first kiss on the cheek— as well as the sadness from the death of a pet and an impending divorce between her adoptive parents.

Solidly a middle grade book, the books are geared for ages 8 – 12, with some allowance depending on individual maturity level, although Willa’s wit and her musings appeal to adults as well. I’m delighted to say that I have a reader who is 77 and goes by the name of “Einstein,” who reached out to me after recovering from a stroke to say that my books are his reentry into the wonderful world of reading. So to him, as well as to you, I humbly say thank you for your consideration of Confessions of a Nerdy Girl.

Warmest regards,

Linda Rey

Middle Grade Author of Confessions of a Nerdy Girl

Hi, I’m Linda Rey, and I write books for teens and tweens. Writing a bio is about as awkward as having to write a “What I Did Last Summer” report the first day back in school, but here goes.

I’m a California girl from start to finish, and I live about twenty miles away from Disneyland. My favorite color is green, but blue is a close second. I’d rather eat potato chips than ice cream, but give me a donut and I’ll be your friend for life. I’m a grandma to seven grandchildren, (but I’m a cool grandma who has a Harley Davidson motorcycle and a tattoo on my wrist that says Believe.) My favorite books as a child were The Secret Garden, Charlotte’s Web, and anything by Judy Blume. My new favorites are The Hunger Games trilogy, Wonder, and The Fault in Our Stars. If I can be remembered for just one thing after I’m gone, I’d want it to be that people thought I was kind.

What I want readers to take away from my books We are not born to fit in; we are born to stand out! It’s cool to be kind. Life is tough, but we are tougher. Middle school is hard. (Not the school work, just all of the other stuff.) It’s OK to wear Friday underwear on a Tuesday. Pimples go away, and a bad haircut grows out. A lot of super smart and successful people had it tough in middle school.
