“When you are ready to embark on the Artist’s Journey and write the book you were called to write, read this book. AJ Harper’s Write a Must Read is itself a must-read, an essential resource to help you produce the works you were put on Earth to bring forth.”
―Steven Pressfield, bestselling author of The War of Art

A book is not about something. A book is for someone.

You want to write a nonfiction book that matters. A book readers love and rave about. A book they underline, dog-ear, and highlight. A must-read.

How do you do that, when you’ve never written a book like that before? When you aren’t sure what content to include in a nonfiction book, or how to organize it? And when you’re not sure if your idea is worth pursuing in the first place?

At the heart of the answers to all these questions is a craft created by AJ Harper, ghostwriter and editor for some of the foremost thought leaders of our time. The foundation of that craft is a simple, yet powerful philosophy: Reader First. When you learn how to put your reader first at every stage of book development, writing, and editing, you can create the connection and trust required to transform their lives.

In these pages, Harper reveals the proven methods and frameworks she has used for nearly two decades to write and edit perennial bestsellers. It’s not the easy way, or the fast way; it’s the effective way. The payoff for doing this important work: a must-read book, and a massive readership who serve as ambassadors for your message and your brand.

More Praise for Write a Must-Read

AJ is the rare writer who can translate the complex craft of writing into gripping, easy-to-digest narrative. If you want people to buy your book, read it, finish it, act on it, and then tell everyone they know to buy it, then buy this book now. If you want to write a book that changes lives, read Write a Must-Read first.”
―Pamela Slim, award-winning author of Escape from Cubicle Nation, Body of Work and The Widest Net

“Even after having worked with AJ on two books, reading Write a Must-Read encouraged me to do more of the most important thing: Get to know my reader even better. Reader First isn’t just a philosophy. It’s a step-by-step process to write the must-read book your readers are waiting for you to write.”

The perfect marriage. The perfect house. The perfect secret…

As I step through the cherry-red door of my new home, I know I should feel like the luckiest woman alive. I have a handsome husband, a beautiful daughter and now the house of my dreams. And to everyone else my life looks perfect…

When the neighbours stop by to welcome us, I tell them my name is Stephanie Hamlin and, under the watchful gaze of my husband Richard, I introduce him and our curly haired little girl Poppy. I smile as wide as I can and desperately hope I can fit in to this exclusive place with its pretty communal gardens. Because I’ve risked everything to be here.

Behind closed doors I try to relax, to unwind in the huge clawfoot bath and forget about my complicated past. It’s hard being the new couple on the street when you’ve got secrets.

Because the truth is, my charming husband isn’t really my husband.

And I’m not Stephanie Hamlin…

An absolutely gripping psychological thriller that will keep you guessing until the last page. If you love Behind Closed Doors, My Lovely Wife and The Perfect Couple, you’ll be hooked.

When seven murder victims are found in a small town, the homicide investigation shakes a small-town sheriff to her core in James Patterson’s tense thriller.

Once a luxurious southern getaway on a rustic lake, then reduced to a dilapidated crash pad, the Summer House is now the grisly scene of a nighttime mass murder. Eyewitnesses point to four Army Rangers—known as the Night Ninjas—recently returned from Afghanistan.

To ensure that justice is done, the Army sends Major Jeremiah Cook, a veteran and former NYPD cop, to investigate. But the major and his elite team arrive in sweltering Georgia with no idea their grim jobs will be made exponentially more challenging by local law enforcement, who resists the Army’s intrusion and stonewall them at every turn.

As Cook and his squad struggle to uncover the truth behind the condemning evidence, the pieces just won’t fit—and forces are rallying to make certain damning secrets die alongside the victims in the murder house. With his own people in the cross-hairs, Cook takes a desperate gamble to find answers—even if it means returning to a hell of his own worst nightmares . . .

A story of summer, secrets, love, and lies: in the course of a singular day on Cape Cod, one woman must make a life-changing decision that has been brewing for decades.

“This house, this place, knows all my secrets.”

It is a perfect August morning, and Elle, a fifty-year-old happily married mother of three, awakens at “The Paper Palace”—the family summer place which she has visited every summer of her life. But this morning is different: last night Elle and her oldest friend Jonas crept out the back door into the darkness and had sex with each other for the first time, all while their spouses chatted away inside. Now, over the next twenty-four hours, Elle will have to decide between the life she has made with her genuinely beloved husband, Peter, and the life she always imagined she would have had with her childhood love, Jonas, if a tragic event hadn’t forever changed the course of their lives. As Heller colors in the experiences that have led Elle to this day, we arrive at her ultimate decision with all its complexity. Tender yet devastating, The Paper Palace considers the tensions between desire and dignity, the legacies of abuse, and the crimes and misdemeanors of families.

Is Watership Down Really ‘Just A Story About Rabbits’?

0

Is Watership Down really ‘just a story about rabbits’?

Rabbits in art and literature are surprisingly resistant to the idea of cuteness. Children generally first encounter anthropomorphised rabbits in the Beatrix Potter stories of Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny; but Peter’s mother reminds him that his father was killed and baked in a pie; Benjamin Bunny is traumatised by a malevolent cat, the reader under no illusions as to the terror he is feeling. Even Bugs Bunny, at the comedic end of the spectrum, regularly has to evade the intentions of the incompetent hunter, Elmer Fudd.
But Watership Down, Richard Adams’s novel, is, although notionally for children, in many respects an adult’s novel; or, rather, a novel that pulls children towards adulthood. It’s the story of a quest undertaken against one’s nature or inclinations – rather in the way that children often see the process of growth. Its first chapter has an epigraph from Aeschylus’s Agamemnon, which is an excellent example of not talking down to your audience.

Adams’s daughters, in interviews about the book as part of the attendant publicity for the forthcoming BBC One adaptation, have been keen to play down any suggestion that their father was trying to allegorise. “‘Rubbish!’ he always said. ‘It’s just a story about rabbits.’”
Well it is, and it isn’t. When I wrote the introduction to the Penguin Modern Classics edition, I said “it is, inescapably, about rabbits” – but added that it is also very much inspired by his experiences in the second world war, and in particular his memories of two officers, Major John Gifford, a quiet but highly respected commanding officer (“he nearly always said please when he gave you an order”, according to Adams), and Captain Paddy Kavanagh, given to acts of astonishing bravado. These are, respectively, Hazel and Bigwig. (For good measure, the language rabbits speak, Lapine, has deliberate echoes of the Arabic he picked up during service in the Middle East.) And the Efrafa warren, run by the monstrous General Woundwort, is a pitch-perfect, and terrifying, description of a military dictatorship.
There has been some talk about how the new adaptation will tone down the violence and gore that upset so many viewers of the 1978 film adaptation; as I haven’t seen the new one, I can’t comment (I’ve seen the trailer, though, and the animation looks disappointing); but one thing I hope it will do is capture the timeless yet fragile beauty of the countryside around which it is set. The book may have episodes that upset and shock – Adams was an admirer of the Scottish-Canadian writer Ernest Thompson Seton, who pointed out in his own animal stories for children that no animal in the wild dies of old age – but it is also, partly, a meticulous portrait of the English countryside, in particular its flowers, which of course the rabbits, being at ground level, will notice even if they do not name them (although their own names are taken almost entirely from nature). But Adams does, and the very names achieve a kind of poetry, or the function of a musical soundtrack: Fleabane, Figwort, Dogwood, Purple Loosestrife, Burdock, Valerian, and countless more.
This is a book that inspired many, I have no doubt, to ecological awareness; indeed, the reason that Hazel and his companions leave the Sandleford warren in the first place is because his brother, Fiver, has a prophecy of imminent destruction by humans. As I write, West Berkshire council is contemplating a proposal to start building 1,000 new homes on Sandleford Park by 2020, which means that Fiver’s vision may well, finally, be fulfilled.
I hope you appreciated this article. Before you move on, I wanted to ask if you would consider supporting the Guardian’s journalism as we enter one of the most consequential news cycles of our lifetimes in 2024.
With the potential of another Trump presidency looming, there are countless angles to cover around this year’s election – and we’ll be there to shed light on each new development, with explainers, key takeaways and analysis of what it means for America, democracy and the world.
From Elon Musk to the Murdochs, a small number of billionaire owners have a powerful hold on so much of the information that reaches the public about what’s happening in the world. The Guardian is different. We have no billionaire owner or shareholders to consider. Our journalism is produced to serve the public interest – not profit motives.
And we avoid the trap that befalls much US media: the tendency, born of a desire to please all sides, to engage in false equivalence in the name of neutrality. We always strive to be fair. But sometimes that means calling out the lies of powerful people and institutions – and making clear how misinformation and demagoguery can damage democracy.
From threats to election integrity, to the spiraling climate crisis, to complex foreign conflicts, our journalists contextualize, investigate and illuminate the critical stories of our time. As a global news organization with a robust US reporting staff, we’re able to provide a fresh, outsider perspective – one so often missing in the American media bubble.
Around the world, readers can access the Guardian’s paywall-free journalism because of our unique reader-supported model. That’s because of people like you. Our readers keep us independent, beholden to no outside influence and accessible to everyone – whether they can afford to pay for news, or not.
If you can, please consider supporting us just once, or better yet, support us every month with a little more. Thank you.
